Govt directive not to impose fine on traffic rule violators until Onam
Thiruvananthapuram: Following a direction from the government, the Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) has temporarily stopped vehicle checking and imposing fine on road rule violators.
The government has issued strict directions to the department not to impose fines until the end of Onam. However, the vehicle squads have not been withdrawn in an effort to create awareness among drivers and road users.
If the MVD imposes, only high penalty as stipulated by the new circular can be issued. It is in this context that the government decided to temporarily stop vehicle checks and imposing fine. Following the increase in penalty, the department had collected over Rs 50,00,000 as fines in just five days.
The directive put an end to special vehicle checks as part of safe Kerala project to reduce the number of actions. The Night Riders road check, which prevented rule violations and charging of exorbitant rates by interstate buses has also been stopped.
Taking advantage of the situation, several private bus operators have started increasing rates.
