Govt approves EMS Memorial in Assembly building, children's library demolished
Thiruvananthapuram: The state government has been accused of spendthrift yet again at a time when the state is going through severe financial crunch. The government has approved the construction of EMS memorial building at a budget of approximately Rs. 83 lakhs. A children’s library, that was built at a cost of Rs 7 lakhs, was demolished for this.
The order regarding the construction was passed during the last financial year. This order, which was kept a secret, was revealed at an RTI enquiry. The construction violates the age old practise that any construction inside the Assembly building will be done only after consultation with the opposition party.
The children’s library was approved during G Karthikeyan's tenure as Speaker. The construction was completed during the tenure of N Shakthan.
The construction of the memorial building has begun. The construction is carried out in the name of a person called Sarath Chandran. It is reported that in the name of Sarath Chandran the construction was handed over to Uralungal.
