Thiruvananthapuram: Renowned dancer and social activist Mallika Sarabhai has been appointed as the new chancellor of Kerala Kalamandalam. The department of cultural affairs issued an order regarding this on Tuesday. Interestingly, the government took the move ahead of tabling a bill to remove the governor as the chancellor of universities in the state.

“ Mallika Sarabhai is a great personality who utilised art and literature for social reformation,” said minister VN Vasavan.

He informed that the government appointed Sarabhai as the chancellor of Kalamandalam upon a decision to elect experts to the post.

“ The government appointed her as the Kerala Kalamadalam chancellor after holding talks with her,” he added.

Earlier, the government had removed governor Arif Mohammed Khan from the post of the Kalamandalam chancellor with a special order. As per the UGC rules, Sponsoring agency of the deemed-to-be university can take a decision on the chancellor. As the government acts as the sponsoring agency, it decided to issue an order appointing Sarabhai as the new chancellor.

Days after removing the governor from the post of Kalamandalam chancellor, the government declared that a person who has expertise in art and culture will be appointed as the new chancellor. An age limit of 75 was also fixed for the candidates for the chancellor’s post.

Mallika Sarabhai is the daughter of famous dancer Mrinalini Sarabhai and space scientist Vikram Sarabhai. She is a world-renowned Bharathanatyam and Kuchipudi dancer.
