Kottayam: The government has shut down the Nirbhaya centre at Manganam here. The Women and Child Development department took the decision to close the shelter home after nine of the inmates including POCSO case survivors escaped from the centre. A new agency will be hired to run the Nirbhaya centre here, revealed sources.

On November 14, nine girls went missing from the shelter home run by the Kerala Mahila Samakhya Society. The girls were traced by the police at the house of one of the inmates within hours.

Several complaints were raised against the shelter home following this. Also, several agencies conducted investigations into the matter.

As a row erupted, the government decided to find another NGO to run the Nirbhaya centre.
