CM Pinarayi Vijayan and Governor Arif Mohammad Khan

Thiruvananthapuram: A day after Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan said he does not want a new car, the state government approved the proposal of the Raj Bhavan for a new official car for the head of the state.

A new Benz GLE of Rs 85.11 lakh has been approved by the government as the Governor's present vehicle is older and bound to be changed as per the safety protocol.

When the news that the request for a new car has been pending with the government for the last two months came out, Governor said that he did not ask for luxury cars. "I did not examine or approve the file related to it," he said. However, he allowed the official to write to the state government as it was a sacurity-related matter.

The current Benz E-Class model used by the Governor is 12 years old. It has travelled 1.5 lakh km while the permitted distance for the cars of VIPs is 1 lakh km.
