Thiruvananthapuram: The demise of the much-adored Gopika teacher was a shock to her family, colleagues and students of RKD NSS Higher Secondary School in Sasthamangalam. However, her unconditional love emanated even more after her death. Gopika bestowed new lives to seven people by donating her organs.

Valiyavila native Gopika Rani (47) passed away after sustaining a stroke due to a haemorrhage in the brain. She was admitted to Sree Chitra Medical Centre six days ago. Gopika’s brain death was confirmed on Wednesday after her health deteriorated drastically.

Gopika’s family, including husband Pradeep Kumar and son Praveen, decided to donate the organs and spread the message of love, humanity, and kindness taught by the teacher even after her death.

The procedures of organ donation were initiated when the family contacted Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation. The surgery began on Wednesday evening and ended by night.

Liver, kidneys, eyes, and heart valves will be donated to the patients, who are under treatment at different hospitals. A patient at KIMS hospital will receive the liver while heart valves will be accorded to the patients in Sree Chitra hospital. Each kidney will be donated to the recipients in Govt Medical College in Thiruvananthapuram and Pushpagiri Medical College.

Through the Hope project, Gopika provided free tuition for the students who resume studies after a break or who had failed in examinations.
