Kollam: Nine bogies of a goods train derailed at Mararithottam between Karunagappally and Sasthamkotta around early Tuesday.
Four bogies of the train, which was loaded with Urea, completely overturned after the derailment, grounding rail traffic for hours. The train was heading to Kottayam from Tirunelveli.
However, traffic along one track was restored by 2.30 am. The derailment damaged the electric lines and the railway sleepers. The wheels of the train had rolled off the track.
The Railway authorities said that the trains will be delayed for hours as most of the services have been halted at various places. The traffic will be restored completely only by afternoon, they added.
Several trains have been cancelled or rescheduled. The Railway Rescue Force have reached the spot.
The Nagercoil -Gandhidham Express (16336) which is normally scheduled to start from Nagercoil at 2 pm, will go through Tiruneveli- Erode- Palakkad-Kozhikode route. The Thrivananthapuram-Nizamudeen Express (12643) has been diverted through Tirunelveli-Madurai-Erode- Salem route. The Kanyakumari-Egmore Express (12634) which normally starts at 5. 20 pm, will start at 11 pm. The Mangaluru-Nagercoil Parasuram express (16649) will end its journey at Ernakulam. Rail traffic in the state was thrown into disarray following derailment of Mangalore Express train at Karukutty near Angamaly on August 28. Following this incident, the Railways had detected defects in over 200 spots along the Ernakulam-Thiruvananthapuram rail track.
The new accident has again disrupted the traffic, which was coming back to normalcy after last month’s mishap.
