Gold worth Rs 97 lakh seized from Karipur airport, 3 held

Karipur: The customs and police here on Thursday seized gold worth Rs 97 lakh from Kozhikode International Airport. Reportedly, police recovered gold worth Rs 35 lakh from a person, while the customs seized gold worth Rs 62 lakh from two others.

The accused have been identified as Tirur native Mustafa (30), Shameer Ali (31) and Abdul Rasaq (39). They had attempted to smuggle the gold as capsules.

According to the police, Mustafa who swallowed gold in capsule form was caught on the basis of a tip-off. An X-ray test showed gold capsules inside his stomach.

Meanwhile, the customs seized four gold capsules and two gold chains from Shameer Ali and Abdul Rasaq respectively.

As per reports, Rasaq had attempted to smuggle the gold chain hidden under his feet.

Shameer Ali had arrived in Karipur on an Air India flight en route from Doha to Kozhikode, whereas Rasaq arrived on another Air India flight from Sharjah.
