Gold worth Rs 100 cr smuggled within 3 months
Kochi: Gold smuggling case accused managed to smuggle gold worth Rs 100 crore within three months, it has come to light. The NIA has found that the huge amount of gold was smuggled with the help of the accused Swapna Suresh between November 2019 and January 2020.
The probe team informed the court regarding this while filing counter-affidavit opposing the bail plea of Swapna Suresh. The affidavit also mentioned that Swapna Suresh and others worked for raising funds for supporting terrorist activities in the country. She had close contacts with high level politicians and bureaucrats.
The NIA pointed out that the accused has influence to fly abroad evading COVID-related restrictions and checking. The hearing on the bail plea of Swapna Suresh will continue in the NIA court on Wednesday.
The NIA probe team also said in the affidavit that Swapna Suresh contacted the Customs to get the seized baggage without the knowledge of UAE attaché. She misled the Customs officials by producing fake documents to prove that there was only food items in the baggage.
Swapna has about Rs 2 crore worth assets. The probe team had seized 8034 US Dollars, 701.5 Omani Riyal and investment documents of Rs 51 lakh from her bag. Also Rs 1 crore and 1 kilogram of gold was found in the locker too. An employee of the UAE consulate cannot earn this much of assets through salary alone.
Swapna Suresh had worked in UAE consulate from October 2016 to October 2019. Evidences were received to prove that she smuggled gold in diplomatic parcel in June 2019. It has to be found out for whom she smuggled the gold, the NIA probe team said.
