Gold smuggling: Swapna Suresh's bail plea rejected
Kochi: The bail plea of Swapna Suresh and Saithalavi, accused in gold smuggling case, has been rejected by the Special Court for Economic Offences here. Meanwhile, the hearing on the bail plea of another accused Samju was postponed to August 17. Earlier, Swapna Suresh was denied bail in the case charged by the NIA also.
The remand period of 8 accused was extended till August 25. The Customs made it clear in the court that Swapna has influence in the police force. As the accused have foreign connections, they are likely to fly abroad if granted bail. The number of accused is increasing day by day and granting bail to the key accused at present will affect the investigation, the Customs pointed out.
The Customs stated in the court that an international racket is functioning behind the gold smuggling. There is a gang that invests in smuggling and deliver the money in Gulf through hawala deals. More evidences in connection with the case can be collected only after Faisal Fareed and Rabins, who are currently abroad, are taken into custody and interrogated, the Customs informed the court.
