Gold Smuggling: Police nab female carrier, two members of extortion gang in Karipur airport

Malappuram: The Karipur police here on Tuesday foiled the bid to smuggle gold worth Rs 8 lakh through Kozhikode International airport. A team of police nabbed three people including a woman over charges of gold smuggling and extortion.

The accused are identified as Sulthan Bathery native Deena (30), Kozhikode natives Mohammad Sahad (24) and Mohammad Jamnas (36).

According to police, Deena who smuggled the gold from Dubai informed the two men to reach the airport for extorting the gold.

The trio was arrested based on a tip-off received by Malappuram district police chief S Sujith Das. Police also seized their vehicle.

Deena smuggled 146 grams of gold from Dubai for Subair, a native of Wayanad. A four-member group reached the airport to snatch this gold.
It is reported that Deena acted as a carrier for the gold smuggling racket earlier too.

But this time, she made plans with a group to extort the gold and divide it among them.

Deena managed to take the gold without getting caught by customs at the airport.

After tricking those who came to collect the gold, she got into a car with the group and drove off. Police followed the group’s vehicle and took them into custody.

After questioning the gang, police recovered the gold from their luggage. The accused were produced before the Manchery court and remanded.

Police said an investigation was on to find others involved in the case.
