Gold smuggling: No tax deduction certificate was issued, says Protocol Dept
Thiruvananthapuram: The protocol department informed the Customs that no tax deduction certificate was granted for the diplomat parcel wing. They informed this in response to the summons of the Customs.
The Customs had sought clarification whether tax deduction certificate is necessary while bringing diplomatic baggage, copy of the handbook that explains this, the number of tax deduction certificates provided from 2019 to 2021 and the copies of the same.
In response to this, the state protocol department informed the other day that UAE consulate or other officials have not approached them for deduction certificate for the period between 2019 and 2021. When goods are brought in diplomatic baggage, tax deduction certificate is essential.
A certificate from the union ministry of external affairs is required if the package is above Rs 20 lakh, and a certificate from the state protocol department is mandatory if it is worth below Rs 20 lakh. This is clearly mentioned in the protocol handbook of 2018. A copy of the same also has been submitted to the Customs.
The protocol department replied to the Customs through email and speed post. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) also had sought for a clarification by sending a summons. The department will respond to the NIA summons on Tuesday or Wednesday.
