Gold smuggling: NIA's request for custody of accused to be considered on Monday
Kochi: The investigation team has tightened the noose in the Thiruvananthapuram gold smuggling case. The Customs took into custody on Sunday a person who is suspected to be the middleman in the gold smuggling deals. None of his details have been disclosed yet. The petition filed by the NIA requesting custody of the accused will be considered on Monday.
Malappuram Vettathoor native Rameez, one of the key links in the smuggling chain, was nabbed by the Customs on Saturday night with the help of police. It is hinted that Rameez used to distribute the gold which was smuggled by Swapna. With this, the total number of accused arrested by Customs and NIA in connection with the case touched five.
Meanwhile, Swapna Suresh and Sandeep Nair who were arrested from Bengaluru the other day, were remanded for three days by the court. NIA court special judge P Krishna Kumar held a special sitting on Sunday. The accused were brought to the court under tight security due to mounting protests by political parties.
The judge returned by 5.30 pm after completing the court procedures. However, the accused were shifted to COVID centres later, as Sandeep requested for medicines for BP. Swapna was shifted to Ambilikala COVID centre in Thrissur and Sandeep was sent to Karukutti COVID centre.
