Gold Smuggling Case: Swapna Suresh moves bail plea in HC
Kochi: Swapna Suresh, the accused in the controversial Thiruvananthapuram airport gold smuggling case has approached the High Court seeking bail in the case registered by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
In the plea, Swapna argued that the UAPA case against her will not exist. She also complained of the delay in trial of the case.
Earlier, a special court of NIA rejected the bail plea of Swapna Suresh.
Interestingly, Swapna moved the bail plea on the same day which marks the first anniversary of the controversial gold smuggling through diplomatic baggage. The HC will consider the bail plea the next day.
It was on July 5, 2020, the customs seized gold from diplomatic baggage at Thiruvananthapuram airport. After seizing the smuggled gold, Swapna Suresh, Sandeep Nair and Sarith were arrested. M Sivasankar, former principal secretary to Chief Minister also arrested in the case.
The gold smuggling case uncovered a set of cases including dollar smuggling and the Life Mission scam.
Central agencies like NIA, Enforcement Directorate and CBI registered cases over gold smuggling. But all these investigations not concluded even after a year. None of the agencies turned successful to bring the key accused Faisal Fareed and UAE consulate former accountant Khalid Muhammad Ali to India.
