Gold Smuggling case: NIA court to keep details of 10 witnesses confidential
Kochi: The NIA court here has decided to keep the details of 10 witnesses in gold smuggling case confidential. The court has taken action upon the request of the National Investigation Agency. Hence, the court will not reveal the details of the witnesses.
In the report before the court, the NIA team has pointed out that the witnesses will face threat to life if their identity is disclosed. Considering this, the court issued an order declaring the 10 witnesses as protected witnesses.
Issuing the order, the court confirmed that names of the 10 witnesses will not be revealed in the court order or other documents relating to the case. Their details will not be disclosed to anyone related to the case including the accused and lawyers.
The protected witnesses will be allowed to appear before the judge during the trial and give their statement. Apart from this, their identity will not be revealed on any account.
In some UAPA cases, the probe agencies used to take such a move to protect the witnesses. A similar move was taken in the gold smuggling case too.
