Youth confesses to Customs as gold carrier but had only small quantity

Karipur: A youth baffled the Customs officers at Karipur Airport by confessing that he was a carrier of gold. The Customs could seize only a paltry amount of gold from the accused which was not enough even to charge a case against him. Though Wayanad native Ijazul Haq is now in custody, the officials could not find the motive behind it.

The incident happened on Sunday around 6.40 am. Karipur police had informed the Customs department that a Mananthavady native is smuggling gold through the airport. The officials strengthened inspection at the airport and arrested Ijazul, who was about to leave from the airport. Soon after he was caught, he confessed that he was entrusted to smuggle gold. Inspecting him, police recovered only 160 gram of gold concealed inside four pills.

During interrogation, the accused said he was kidnapped and was forced to carry gold to Kozhikode. The gang had offered him Rs 50,000 for smuggling gold. Customs did not believe Ijazul and suspect he voluntarily surrendered before the Customs. The mixture of the pills have been sent to a narcotic laboratory to find whether it contains any psychotropic drugs.
