Giving new life to five persons, bride-to-be Nibiya takes last breath
Kochi/Kottayam: Leaving behind her wedding dreams, Nibiya bid farewell to the world after donating her organs to others. Nibiya Mary Joseph (25) who was injured in a road accident in Perumbavoor on Monday had brain death on Thursday night. Her family decided to donate her organs on Friday morning.
Nibiya’s heart was transplanted to Changanassery Nalukodi native Sanjeev Gopi (30) who is under treatment in Kottayam Medical College. One of her kidneys was donated to another patient in Kottayam Medical College. Another kidney and pancreas were donated to two patients in Amrita Hospital and liver was given to a patient in Aster Medcity. The organ transplant surgery was led by Dr. Mathew Jacob, Dr. Shijoy and Dr. Romal.
Nibiya, a nurse in Chennai Apollo Hospital, is the daughter of Idukki Kattappana native late Joseph Chacko and Nirmala. The mishap occurred when the family was travelling to Ernakulam for wedding shopping ahead of Nibiya’s marriage scheduled for August. Her father Joseph also died in the accident and her brother Nidhin Jospeh is under treatment. Nibiya’s last rites will be held at Pazhaya Kochara St. Joseph’s Church on Saturday at 4.30 pm.
As Nibiya’s heart was donated, a heart transplant surgery was performed in Kottayam Medical College under the leadership of medical college superintendent and head of cardiology department Dr. T. K. Jayakumar. The surgery started at 4 pm on Friday and finished after three hours. This is the fifth heart transplant surgery performed in Kottayam Medical College so far.
