Ghazal singer Umbayee passes away
Aluva: Eminent ghazal maestro Umbayee passed away at a private hospital here in Aluva on Wednesday at around 4.45 pm. He was 68.
He was under treatment for cancer.
Born in Mattancherry, Umbayee is known for his unique style of singing. Popularly known as Umbayee, P Abu Ibrahim, was an inevitable factor in Kerala’s cultural evenings.
He has composed music for the poems written by prominent poets like Satchidanandan, ONV Kurup and rendered so beautifully that Malayali’s can never forget.
More than 12 ghazal albums have been produced by him. He has also composed music for a movie.
His most remarkable contribution to the field of music was that he had re-created many film songs in the ghazal genre.
It was famous director John Abraham who gave the name Umbayee to P Abu Ibrahim. Umbayee had sung a ghazal in John's film Amma Ariyan.
