Ghat, interstate roads damaged; Wayanad isolated
Kozhikode: Relentless heavy rains have rendered Wayanad district isolated as road access to other areas in Kerala and neighbouring states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu got cut off on Friday.
Thamarasserry, Nadukani, Pakramthalam, Palchuram or (Milky Mountain Road) and Periya ghat roads are in danger with landslides reported from several spots.
As Ponkuzhi near Muthanga came under water, road traffic through Bathery-Mysore road was halted. With water level in Kabani river rising, road traffic through Kutta-Gonikoppal road also came to a standstill. Only a handful of KSRTC buses from Mananthavady are operating through this route.
Traffic through Nadukani, Pakramthalam and Palchuram ghat roads were stopped due to landslides. As 42nd mile in Thalappuzha got submerged, traffic movement through Periya ghat road also became impossible. Heavy rains and gusty winds uprooting trees which fall on the roads are also blocking traffic.
On Thursday itself, officials had banned heavy vehicles from moving through Thamarasserry ghat road. Rarely does even small private vehicles go through this route now. The residents are very concerned as rains, which subsided in the morning, intensified again at noon on Friday.
