Students protesting at Govt Engineering College, Wayanad
Thalappuzha (Wayanad): Girl students of Wayanad Govt Engineering College staged a demonstration under the Students Federation of India against the gender discrimination prevailing in the college hostels on different curfew timings for girls and boys. The protests began at 6.30 pm on Monday and ended only by noon on Tuesday.
Amid the protests, the students had dinner cooking themselves.
The entry time for girls and boys to the hostel were 7.30 pm and 9.30 pm respectively. The girl students demanded to change the entry time to 9.30 pm. Though the students had lodged complaint to the college authorities over this, no action was taken on the issue. The students have pointed out many other inadequacies in the college and hostel too.
The authorities claimed that the entry time for girls was made early considering the Maoist threat and attack of wild animals and reptiles in the locality. However, the students questioned if these threats were not applicable for boys.
Following demonstrations, the staff council of the college conducted a meeting with the representatives of protesting students. It has been decided to change the entry time for girls to 9.30 pm, until a final decision is expected to be taken in the PTA meeting scheduled on May 21. The students have temporarily withdrawn from the protests.
