Mukkam: The protest against the GAIL pipeline project at Mukkam in Kozhikode intensified on Thursday.
As the clash between the police and the protesters continued, police arrested the agitators from their houses.
The hartal declared in three panchayats today in protest against the police lathiharge on Wednesday turned violent.
North DGP Rajesh Dewan reached Mukkam to review the situation. A high-level meeting has been called at Mukkam police station.
The protesters have blocked the roads with logs and burnt tyres. The vehicular traffic along Koyilandy-Edavanna state highway has been completely disrupted.
21 people were arrested in connection with the case and produced in court. A few people are kept in jail as precautionary measure. Cases of destroying public property and attempt to murder have been charged against them.
Trouble broke out at Eranjimavu in Mukkam on Wednesday between the police and protesters who were against laying of the GAIL pipeline. The protest that had been continuing for the past six months turned violent, when the agitators attacked the vehicle of GAIL officials after reaching the venue to continue the land acquisition process for the project.
The police retorted with lathi charge. The police also sprang into action and dismantled the shed put up by the protesters.
The people were protesting over the land takeover for the laying of the pipeline. Besides that, they also demanded a re-survey to be conducted.
