Gabriel Chundan lifts Nehru Trophy
Alappuzha: The Gabriel Chundan, rowed by Ernakulam Thuruthipuram boat club, made a dream debut in Nehru trophy boat race by winning the prestigious title in a tightly contested final on Saturday.
The debutant outdid Payippad, Karichal and Mahadevikkad Kattil Thekkethil snake boats in a photo finish.
The final was delayed following disputes over number of professional rowers that could be allowed in each boat.
Owing to foul start, the third heat was disrupted four times. This also stirred up arguments which in turn delayed the finals.
The four boats were qualified for the finals after cloaking best timings among the 20 snake boats competed in five heats.
This year’s Nehru Trophy boat race also created history with the number of contestants. A total of 78 boats, including the 20 snake boats, lined up this time.
