Iritty: The recommendation to construct a Gabion wall in Iritty-Virajpetta interstate road has been submitted for the approval of the Kerala State Transport Project (KSTP) chief engineer. Construction of the Gabion wall was proposed to prevent soil erosion from the hill near Iritty bridge.

Based on the recommendation from the World Bank team, more land was acquired near the bridge junction and it was widened so as to reduce the number of accidents. Many parts of the hill eroded and caused accidents. The movement of vehicles through this road is very risky as there are huge pieces of rock on the hill.

The debris from the latest incident of soil erosion is still lying near the guest house. Traffic has been diverted to one side of the road by installing dividers. The contract company authorities stated that they have not removed the debris as it may cause further erosion.

Three houses are located next to the area where soil erosion happened. These families demand that their land should be taken over by providing suitable compensation. The area next to the entrance of the bridge is also at risk. Small scale soil erosions were reported from this part during monsoon season.

The bridge will be opened for the public in December this year. Action should be taken to make the road risk-free within this period of time. Thalassery-Valavupara road was renovated four years ago including it in the KSTP project.
