Mukkom (Kozhikode): Price of most vegetables doubled in the last two weeks, making day-to-day life difficult for ordinary people. In the wholesale market, the price of tomato has crossed Rs 50 and the price of onions too soared to Rs 50.
The price of tomatoes is now between Rs 55 and Rs 60 per kg in the retail market in Kerala. Ironically, tomatoes were thrown away by the farmers just two months back as they failed to get back the invested amount. The price of onions has gone up from Rs 30 to Rs 50 and the price of potato from Rs 25 to Rs 40.
The price of green chillies, drumstick, lady’s finger and cucumber is also skyrocketing. Lady’s finger, which was selling for Rs 40 two weeks ago, is now priced at Rs 70 and drumstick at Rs 100. The price of cucumber has gone up from Rs 20 to Rs 30.
Coriander leaves are sold by retailers for Rs 90 to Rs 100. The wholesale price of a carrot has gone up from Rs 40 to Rs 60 and retailers sell carrots for Rs 70. The wholesale price of cabbage has gone up from Rs 20 to Rs 30. Cauliflower prices have gone up from Rs 30-35 to Rs 45-50.

The hike in vegetable prices will significantly affect the hotels and common people as the Sabarimala pilgrimage season is set to begin on November 16. The vendors claim that the rise in prices is due to the massive destruction of vegetable crops following the floods in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. They also said that there is no flow of vegetables into Kerala according to the consumption level which has also contributed to the rise in prices. According to retailers, prices skyrocketed by Diwali. They also said that the average price of seven vegetables has risen between Rs 10 and Rs 20 within a week.
There has been an increase in price of bananas too. The retail price of bananas has gone up from Rs 35- 40 to Rs 45. Wholesalers say that the rise in banana price is due to the shortage of native bananas and rising fuel prices. The planters of Wayanad and Karnataka are dependent on bananas currently.
The price of shallots and garlic have not increased significantly. The retail price of shallots is Rs 60 while the price of garlic is Rs 100. If the rain turns heavy, the prices will also go up.
