Kochi startup brings new wave of elderly care

Kottayam: “Could you take us to church festival. We just want to roam around the church premises,” was one of the service request received by home health care service provider Happymindz Elder Care, Kochi.

Two professionals from Happymindz took the couple in their 80s who made this request and returned them home safely, after spending time at the church.

In last six months, this home health care service provider has received more than 100 such requests and they are actively taking it up. Some of the common requests, the centre has been receiving are for:

  • Outing
  • Eating outdoors
  • Meeting old friends
  • Visiting pilgrimages in proximity
  • Buying medicines, staples
  • Assisting for small maintenance work at house
  • Accompanying for doctor’s visit
Not just requests like this but also the centre has been providing 50 services for elderly citizens. By now, it has customers in Ernakulam, Kottayam and Thrissur districts. The services are priced at a range of Rs 499 to Rs 1,999.

The centre is spearheaded by Angamaly native Jolly Jose, who has worked with organizations like Flipkart.

According to sociologist Dr KN Harilal startup like this is necessary for Kerala population having more than 16 per cent of elderly citizens.

“Kerala has witnessed growth in palliative care, geriatric clinics and day homes. Credible agencies have high potential in the spectrum,” he said.
