Thiruvananthapuram: The distribution of the free Onam food kit would start on Thursday, said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at the press meet on Tuesday. The free grocery kits of 11 items will be distributed to 88 lakh ration cardholders ahead of this year’s Onam falling during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The kits were prepared in 2000 packaging centres in the state ensuring quality and quantity of the items. The kit will contain items worth Rs 500 and will be distributed through ration shops.
At first, the kit will be distributed to 5,95,000 families who are Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) yellow cardholders, from August 13 to 16. Following this, 31 lakh Priority Household (PHH) pink cardholders will be provided with the kit from August 19 to 22.
The free food kit will be distributed to the rest 51 lakh cardholders (blue and white) ahead of Onam.
In addition, 10 kg rice will be distributed, from August 13, at Rs 15 per kg rate to non-priority sections who do not receive adequate ration, he added.
Also, Onam markets will be operational in all districts from August 21 to 31, he further said.
