Thiruvananthapuram: Minister K Radhakrishnan said that SC/ST students in the state would be given free membership in libraries under the State Library Council. Through this, the government aims to bring in reading and cultural habits among youngsters.

Students will receive membership upon producing the declarations issued by promoters in SC/ST development departments. Further, students do not need to produce the caste certificate issued by the village officer. K Radhakrishnan remarked that it was the first time such an initiative was launched in the country.

Further, the government will set up facilities in SC/ST areas without libraries. Books will be made available in 54 social classrooms under the Scheduled Tribes Development Department.
