Kozhikode: Fraudsters are fleecing residents in Kozhikode localities in the name of the government’s Jal Jeevan Mission.

Reports have emerged that many parties are involved in the testing of water quality by pretending as officials of Jal Jeevan Mission and charging the residents even for quality check services that are done free of cost by the mission. They collect the water samples and are issuing certificates from private laboratories. Some entities approached residential associations to strike a deal.

They are charging a price of Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500. Some are offering a commission of Rs 100 per household to middlemen who help them to strike a deal.

The issue has been reported from various panchayats in the district. Kakkodi, Chelannur and Meppayur are some regions where the issue has been rampant.

Notably, the fraudsters are pursuing this venture at a time when Jal Jeevan Mission is conducting free water sample checks. Water authority and panchayat administrations have been flooded by complaints.

Meanwhile, the quality control division of the water authority informed that basic quality check as a part of Jal Jeevan Mission is completely free. No entity has been assigned to collect the sample and people should maintain caution, the official said.
