Franco Mulakkal files bail plea in HC; Police unlikely to ask for extension of custody
Kochi: Jalandhar bishop Franco Mulakkal who was arrested in connection with the nun rape case has filed a bail plea in the Kerala High Court on Monday. The bishop made the move as his police custody expires on Monday at 2.30 pm.
The police are less likely to ask for extension of the custody period as the interrogation and evidence collection have been complete. The court will consider the bail plea in the afternoon.
It is pointed out in the bail plea that the bishop had fully cooperated with the investigation and that the arrest was unnecessary. Also it is noted that an anticipatory bail plea was filed and the court had adjourned it. It is learned that the police will oppose the bail plea.
Meanwhile, the high court opined that CBI probe is not necessary into the case and also asked to withdraw the plea filed demanding CBI probe. The Division Bench headed by Chief Justice said that the police investigation should be allowed to proceed independently. Thus the petitioners informed the court that they are withdrawing the plea.
