Thiruvananthapuram: Former MLA and retired professor A Nabeesa Ummal passed away on Saturday. She was 92. She has served as the principal of University College, Thiruvananthapuram, and was a former chairperson of Nedumangad municipality.

Nabeesa, who was born in June 1931, secured a degree in Malayalam from University College and later served as the head of department and principal at the college. She is the first Muslim woman in Kerala to secure a post graduate degree in Malayalam.

She had also contested and won as a CPI(M)-backed independent candidate from Kazhakootam in the 1987 Assembly polls.

She is survived by daughters, Laila and Thara, and sons, Rahim and Salim. Her husband, Husain Kunju, a daughter and a son predeceased her.
