Kozhikode: CPM leader and former Kozhikode district secretary M. Kelappan passed away. He was 74. The demise came in the wee hours of Sunday at Vadakara Cooperative Hospital.
The body will be kept at Vadakara town hall from 9 am to 12 pm on Sunday for the public to pay homage. Funeral will take place at 4 pm on the house premises.
Born in a poor family, Kelappan joined Congress at the age of 17 being attracted to Gandhian philosophy. Working in Kisan Sabha, he soon joined Communist party.
Kelappan has also penned folksongs and literary works under the name ‘Panikkotti’. His work ‘Sivapuram Kotta’ written by him was later adapted into the movie ‘Achanum Makanum’. He also published his autobiography titled ‘Amritha Smaranakal’.
Kelappan had served as CPM’s Vadakara constituency committee member, area secretary and Kunnummal area secretary for a long time. He became district committee member in 1975 and served as district secretary for 10 years from 1991 to 2001.
M. Kelappan had been Vadakara municipal councillor for about 22 years. He was a state committee member of Karshaka Thozhilali Union. He had also served as the LDF district convenor.
