Adimali: The body of the leopard killed by a tribal youth in Mankulam was examined and it was inferred that the injury it sustained on head was the reason for death.

The National Tiger Conservation Authority will hand over the report to Department of Forest on Monday. The body of the leopard was cremated near the Mankulam range office.

Chikkanamkudi native Gopalan had hacked the leopard to death when it attacked him on way to his farming area on Saturday. The forest department granted financial assistance of Rs 5000 for treatment as he sustained injuries in the leopard attack.

The officials informed that the leopard was 10 years old and weighs 40 kilograms. The leopard has lost most of its teeth due to old age. This might have urged the leopard to come out of the forest in search of food.

No case was registered against Gopalan, as the range officer was convinced that the former had killed the leopard for self-defense. The forest department will conduct awareness classes for the people who reside on forest borders.
