Forest Department collects jackfruits to drive wild elephant away into forest in Thrissur

Jackfruits being collected

Thrissur: Forest Department officials and locals here in Palappilly are collecting jackfruits to steer a wild elephant away from people-inhabited areas. The Forest Department has pulled a new trick out of their hat where jackfruits are collected and deposited deep within the forest to lure the tusker away from the village.

Palappilly Range Officer Prem Shameer said that more than 50 jackfruits were collected from a single tree. The collected fruits are carried into the forest in special vehicles arranged for this purpose. The ripe jackfruits are one of the reasons why wild elephants come to populated areas. The elephants also trample over the coconut and banana trees in the vicinity.

Although it has not caused much damage yet, the locals are living in fear of the wild elephant. Many people have reported sightings of the elephant’s footprints near the premises of their houses.

Although the Forest Department scanned the area using a drone camera, the elephant couldn’t be located.
