Kovalam: In an unfortunate incident, a taxi driver assaulted a foreigner visiting Kovalam on Friday. Shajahan (40), a taxi driver, was arrested by Kovalam police for attacking Calvin Scolt, a Netherland native.

The incident happened on Friday noon when Calvin and his father, Jacques Leonard, boarded his friend Syam Prasad's car near a hotel in Kovalam. Shajahan, who arrived at the spot, stopped them by parking his bike in front of their vehicle. He tried to force Calvin and his father to step out after claiming that foreigners visiting Kovalam should not be allowed to travel in private vehicles.

In a verbal altercation that followed, Shajahan allegedly assaulted Syam Prasad and punched Calvin while he tried to mediate. Later, Shajahan was arrested based on a complaint before the Kovalam police.

A few months back, a taxi driver similarly assaulted a foreigner in Kovalam. The taxi drivers are unhappy with the tourists resorting to private vehicles to travel here.
