Food safety department closes down 48 eateries on Wednesday


Thiruvananthapuram: The food safety department raided 547 eateries on Wednesday, said health minister Veena George. As many as 48 joints were closed down (18 due to unhygienic surroundings and rest for lacking licence).

Notice was served to another 142 eateries. The search will continue in the coming days, she said.

A fresh round of inspections was started following the death of a nurse in Kottayam allegedly due to food poisoning.

She said more than 50,000 inspections were conducted in the past six months. Operation Shawarma, Operation Malsya, Operation Jaggery and Operation Holiday were organised over this time. Rs 97.6 lakh was collected as fine, she said.
