Kottayam: DYFI staged a protest in front of a hotel in Sankranthi on Tuesday in connection with the death of a nurse due to food poisoning. The protestors vandalised the property, alleging Kottayam Municipality failed to take action against the hotel.

Kiliroor native Reshmi Raj (33), a nurse at the Orthopedics department at Govt Medical College in Kottayam, died while undergoing treatment for food poisoning after eating Alfahm bought from the hotel ‘Malappuram Manthi’ at Sankranthi.

Following the incident, the Kottayam Municipality closed the hotel. On Tuesday, DYFI workers destroyed the boards and planted pots displayed in front of the hotel. They also staged a protest march in the area. They alleged that a lacklustre approach from municipality officials and their negligence in conducting inspections had led to the incident.

Meanwhile, it is learned that several people were hospitalised in the past after consuming food from the same hotel. However, it was alleged that the municipality failed to take action against the hotel.

Two months back, the health department also issued a notice to the hotel for serving stale food.
