Flutist-musician Guruvayur S Sreekrishnan passes away
Thrissur: Noted flutist and musician Guruvayur S. Sreekrishnan passed away in the wee hours of Sunday. He was 86. The last rites will be held at Bengaluru on Monday.
Late singer Gayathri Sreekrishnan was his wife. Gayathri is known for her song ‘Nazhiyurippalu Kond Nadake Kalyanam’. Flutist and musician G. S. Rajan and Bharatanatyam dancer and drama artist Sujatha Das are their children.
Sreekrishnan was introduced to the world of music by his mother Kanakambal. He received primary lessons of flute from N. Krishna Bhagavathar and K. V. Ramachandra Bhagavathar. His first public performance was at the age of eight. In 1954, he joined All India Radio and retired as station director in 1994.
Srikrishnan has composed more than 800 light music songs and devotional songs. He has performed flute concerts at various places within the country. He bagged Kerala Sangeetha Nadaka Akademi Award in 1985 and a fellowship of the Akademi in 1997. In 2001, he also won Guruvayurappan Award.
