Kollam: The police on Saturday arrested five CITU (Centre of Indian Trade Unions) activists for allegedly thrashing a supermarket owner in Nilamel. The accused are Premdas, Raghu, Jayesh, Sinu and Mohanan Pillai. They have been charged with trespassing and assault.

The victim has been identified as Shan, owner of Union Corp Supermarket at Nilamel junction. He is currently undergoing treatment in a private hospital.

The incident took place on Friday around 3.30 pm. Reportedly, a gang of 12 CITU activists thrashed Shan near the supermarket godown in the area.

Apparently, Shan forbade a CITU activist from drinking alcohol near the godown. Following which, the activist, who was reluctant to leave, was forcefully shifted from the area by the supermarket employees.

Later, a 12-member gang of CITU activists came to the area and thrashed the owner in an act of revenge. The CCTV footage of the activists beating Shan in front of the supermarket counter was widely circulated on social media.
