First women police station in India turns 45 on Saturday
Kozhikode: India’s first women police station located in Kozhikode is going to celebrate its 45th anniversary on Saturday. The station was inaugurated by the then prime minister Indira Gandhi on October 27, 1973.
The first sub-inspector in the women police station was M. Padmavathi. Apart from her, there were 15 other officers in head constable and constable ranks. The first duty assigned to women police was to find out three children who went missing in the heavy rush of people who arrived to watch the inauguration.
"Indira Gandhi had returned after writing her name in the visitors' book and gifting her pen to the then SI Padmavathi", recollected Rev. Dr. G. S. Francis who was working in Kozhikode at that time.
Also the then governor N. N. Wanchoo, chief minister Achutha Menon and home minister K. Karunakaran recorded their comments in the visitors' book.
In the inaugral ceremony, then constable M. C. Kuttiyamma delivered vote of thanks in Hindi and was widely appreciated. It was the women police officers who controlled the traffic that day. Earlier, sari was the uniform of women police and later it was changed to trousers and shirt.
Later, women police stations were started in many places in the state. The station was developed in a way that handles all types of cases in addition to women safety issues.
Presently, there are 24 officers in the women police station. Six among them are working in other departments as part of work schedule. Though helpline is under the control room, it is also functioning associated with woman police station.
Women police officers opined that the number of eve teasing issues are on the high among the women safety cases reported. Earlier, women hesitated to approach the police stations, but there are no such issues nowadays, they said.
Current SI of women police station M. Reetha said that they offer all possible help to the women who seek help. No special celebrations are arranged as part of the 45th anniversary, but would work hard more responsibly, she added.
