Thiruvananthapuram: Opposition leader VD Satheesan on Tuesday retaliated to the ruling party's condemnation of the satyagraha carried out by the UDF-led opposition in the well of the assembly. EMS Namboodiripad was the first person to hold a satyagraha in the assembly, he reminded.
He was reacting to an LDF minister's claim that the incident was unusual in the history of Kerala. Speaker AN Shamseer also backed this comment, noted Satheesan.
He further elaborated on the episode. Kerala assembly witnessed the first satyagraha in its well on October 21, 1974. EMS Namboodiripad was the opposition leader then. Following this, on February 25, 1975, the opposition MLAs spent a whole night in assembly on account of the satyagraha declared by EMS himself. A similar incident was repeated during the term of VS Achuthanadan’s ministry in 2011.
Satheesan also accused the ruling party of refraining from holding discussions with the opposition. The opposition cannot comprise if the Chief Minister arrogantly says that he will dictate what would happen in the assembly, said Satheesan.
