Kannur: When passengers pulled the emergency chains after a man set fire on co-passengers in Alappuzha- Kannur Executive Express, the D1 coach was above the Korapuzha river in Elathur. The passengers who were on board said that a few persons who were set on fire jumped outside when the train slowed down. Some others sustained severe burn injuries in the incident.
The fire quickly spread, engulfing passengers' clothing and seats. Witnesses reported hearing loud screams coming from the train. According to reports, the incident began with an argument, during which the perpetrator poured petrol on one of his co-passengers before setting them on fire.
Other passengers tried to douse the fire and ended up with burn injuries. Those injured included three women.
In panic, the other passengers had pulled the emergency chains of four coaches and the railway authorities were informed about the fire incident.
The security force sealed the D1 coach immediately after the train reached Kannur railway station at 11.45 pm. Nine passengers, who suffered burn injuries are currently under treatment. The condition of three persons among them are reportedly critical.
