Fire in Neelakurinji sanctuary not man-made, says Forest minister
Thiruvananthapuram: Minister for forest K Raju ruled out foul play in the Neelakurinji sanctuary fire. He stated that the visuals of the fire that was being transmitted was taken six months ago and was part of a wild forest fire.
“We cannot assure whether the area of the sanctuary would be decreased or increased. A clear picture regarding the area will be given after a detailed re-evaluation,” said forest minister.
About 300 acres of grassland with Neelakurinji were destroyed in a fire the other day. According to reports, the area, including the land owned by Idukki MP Joyce George in Devikulam taluk, was destroyed in the fire.
It was alleged that somebody had set fire to the land to prove that the area was not part of the sanctuary while the government has initiated action to realign the boundaries of the sanctuary.
