Kochi: Women will soon be a part of Fire and Rescue Service department in the state. They will be inducted to the force as Firewomen. The department has sought the government’s permission to make appointments through PSC.
The move will make Kerala the third state in India to induct women into fire and rescue services. Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu already have women fire and rescue service personnel. Kerala had evaluated the work conditions and challenges faced by the personnel in these states.
The government has released an order granting 100 firewomen posts in the fire and rescue service department. The department has submitted directions to the government regarding the qualification, physical fitness and training necessary for those who will be appointed as firewomen. This will help form the rules and regulations for appointment. The recruitment process is yet to start.
Fore and rescue services is a very challenging occupation with a lot of physical demands. Considering these factors, a directive for training has been issued as well. It is evaluated that those working in these posts are performing excellently.
If the recruitments are according to the earlier directive, 15 firewomen will be appointed in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode districts while 5 each would be appointed in the remaining districts.
“A government order is mandatory to start recruitments to the force and we have asked the government to issue the same,” said R Prasad, Fire and Rescue Service department director (technical).
