Finance department urges to levy flood cess
Thiruvananthapuram: The state finance department has asked the government to start levying flood cess to raise fund for rebuilding post-flood Kerala. The LDF government proposed the flood cess in the last budget. It is learned that chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who is on his European tour, will take a decision on this once he arrives back to his office.
The government extended implementation of flood cess due to elections. The GST council granted permission to Kerala to levy one percent cess on the value of goods in GST. With the new cess government aims to find Rs 600 crore to rebuild the flood ravaged state.
It is reported that if chief minister approves the demand to levy the cess, it will come into force from June or July for a 2-year period.
