Thiruvananthapuram: Finance Minister Thomas Isaac on Tuesday faced the wrath of LDF MLAs during the presentation of the bill related to GST ordinance.
During the discussion, CPM MLA Suresh Kurup opined that the GST Bill is part of RSS’ political agenda.
“RSS is challenging the diversity of the nation. The minister should have understood it,” he said.
In a veiled attack on Isaac, party MLA M Swaraj said the minister cannot confront the questions on inflation citing technicality.
Independent MLA P C George said Isaac showed more eagerness than Prime Minister Narendra Modi in implementing the GST.
Meanwhile, T V Rajesh MLA backed Isaac stating the Finance Minister fought hard to protect the interest of the state.
In his response, Isaac said he is acknowledging the criticism in connection with the GST.
“GST failed to bring in any drop in prices. Its implementation lacked enough groundworks. I admit that the rights of the state were taken away. Even before the LDF government assuming office, the Lok Sabha had passed the GST Bill,” Isaac said, adding that the stance was taken with the authorisation of the party.
“I feel regret for opposing the GST Bill during the Congress regime. Then the maximum tax rate was 18 percent,” he added.
