He was a prominent player of the Indian football team that participated in the 1960 Rome Olympics and the gold-winning team of the 1962 Asian Games.

Kochi: Former Indian football team captain Olympian Chandrasekharan (86) passed away on Tuesday at his residence here in Kochii .

He was a prominent player of the Indian football team that participated in the 1960 Rome Olympics and the gold-winning team of the 1962 Asian Games. Chandrasekaran was one of the key defenders when India drew with France in the 1960 Rome Olympics. He also won silver medals with the Indian team in the 1964 FC Asian Cup and Merdeka tournaments in 1959 and 1964. He represented India in the qualifying round of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

He was in the Indian team from 1958 to 1966. Hailing from Irinjalakkuda in the Thrissur district he made his international debut in the Asian Cup Qualifiers in 1959. He had played with stalwarts like Peter Thankaraj, SS Narayanan, PK Banerjee, Jarnail Singh, Chuni Goswami and Simon Sundararaj.
