The officers contacted Fazil Fareed through the phone of one of his friends as they were unable to contact him directly.

Dubai: Customs officials spoke to Fazil Fareed, the third accused in Thiruvananthapuram gold smuggling, over phone and sought information regarding the case. Customs officials recorded Fazil Fareed’s statement over the phone as he is residing in Dubai.

The officers contacted Fazil Fareed through the phone of one of his friends as they were unable to contact him directly. However, it is reported that Fazil evaded the questions by not giving proper answers.

Customs had found out earlier that Fazil was the one who sent the gold to Thiruvananthapuram. Sarith, Swapna and Sandeep acted as middlemen in the transaction. After these three accused were caught, customs also took a Malappuram native, Rameez, to custody.

It is reported that Rameez, who made financial investment in gold smuggling, is a key member of the gang. He was brought to Kochi on Sunday morning and is being interrogated. It was during this interrogation that customs contacted Fazil Fareed.
