Fault of revenue officers costs building owner huge amount as fine
Cherthala: When the Revenue Department informed Vijayakumar to pay the building tax of Rs 69,000, he paid it on time without fail. Three years later, they informed him that the earlier amount was quoted by mistake and the actual amount to pay was Rs 1,69,000. Shortly after this, Vijayakumar paid the remaining Rs 1 lakh too.
After a year, the Revenue Department again approached him asking to pay the fine of Rs 45,242 for delaying the payment of Rs 1 lakh. But this time he refused to pay the amount. He asked why he should pay the fine for the mistake of the revenue officials. The mistake occurred while calculating Cherthala native Vijayakumar's building tax.
In 2016, he had paid Rs 69,000 as tax in the revenue department. But an inspection of the Taluk office by the Land Revenue Commission found out a fault with this amount in November 2019 and following this, Vijayakumar paid the remaining amount also. Later, the Revenue Department demanded him to pay the fine of over Rs 1 lakh.
The Department justified that the mistake occurred as they were dealing with many such cases. Hence they were not willing to give any exemption for Vijayakumar. But he has decided not to pay the fine as it was not his mistake.
