Tanur: Father-son duo, Hamsa (Babu) and his son, were among the first group of rescuers to arrive at the accident site at Thooval Theeram to rescue the boat accident victims. They used their expertise in scuba diving to speed up the operation.
"I came here after receiving a message through a WhatsApp group for scuba divers. My son and I arrived late at night, and the presence of thick layers of mud and poor visibility at night made the rescue operation a herculean task," said Hamsa.
The accident, which occurred around 7 pm on Sunday, resulted in at least 22 passengers drowning. The rescue operation is still ongoing to recover bodies.
Hamsa and his son also helped haul the capsized boat to shore. "The passengers could not escape from the boat due to glass coverings and steel bars on the side of the boat. Locals, especially fishermen, were behind the rescue operation. They saved people before the other units arrived at the scene," Hamsa said.
A tourist boat carrying around 35 passengers capsized in the Purapuzha estuary in Malappuram on Sunday. The accident occurred about 300 meters off the shore. Additionally, several of those involved in the rescue operation suffered injuries while rescuing people trapped inside the boat.
