From now on, all four wheelers approaching the Kerala Motor Vehicle Department for fitness certificate and registration renewal will need FASTag.

This is the route taken by the state government to implement the central government order to collect toll on National Highways through FASTag only.

Private cars are given first registration for 15 years. Then the registration is renewed for 15 years. Taxi vehicles must undergo fitness tests at regular intervals.

FASTag can be bought online or through banks. Online websites charge Rs 150 to Rs 500 for FASTag. The FASTags, fixed on the windshield of the vehicles, are connected to bank accounts. Each time a vehicle with FASTag goes through a toll gate, the fee will be collected from the account using a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system.

The other day, the central government had decided to mandate FASTag on all vehicles from January 1, 2020. The order is applicable for vehicles which have four wheel s or more. Dealers provide FASTag for vehicles sold after December 2017.

FASTag makes toll collection easy as vehicles do not have to stop at the toll gate to pay cash. Authorities will receive data regarding vehicles that pass through toll gates instantaneously. This will also help track stolen vehicles being transported to other states.
